Geek Fashion Fix: Fictional Style Icon | Tahani Al-Jamil
First things first: there are a lot of fictional characters out there who's closets I'd like to raid, or at the very least, stare at in complete awe.
That's why Fictional Style Icons will now be an official recurring installment to the blog, bringing you the new wardrobe your geeky hearts desire every Thursday. And considering how long my list is, I don't think it's going to be the least bit difficult.
This week, we're going to take a look at the style of a woman who looks better than all of us, even when she's dead. Yes, dead. She's still slaying everyone with looks from the afterlife.
Her name's Tahani Al-Jamil from the NBC sitcom The Good Place, and she's probably judging my posture as I write this.
Tahani falls into the realm of an unexpected style icon for me: she modernizes the classic prim & proper, with tea-length skirts and dresses, ruffles, lots of floral prints, and sunhats with brims as wide as they come. None of it is personally my style, but every week, without fail, I find myself gazing at her dresses on TV, thinking to myself how I'd still buy one to go to a garden party or have afternoon tea with friends.
Two things, again, I'd probably never do, but a girl can dream, right?
What I think appeals to me the most about Tahani's style, though, is that sometimes, if you're paying close enough attention, it can be downright ridiculous. Like, did I just see her rock elbow-length gloves? Who still wears pearls? Or breaks out a satin cocktail dress on any given weekday? And who in their right mind owns that many floral dresses?
She does, and while most of what she did with her time on Earth was to keep her image up for others, I think it's safe to say this is done for herself. That's what makes her the perfect style icon. Tahani is nothing if not graceful and delicate and has found the perfect wardrobe to embody that.
Plus, I can't help but get total modern-day Disney princess vibes from her wardrobe. (Seriously, the girl could give Kate Middleton a run for her money... and crown.) Of course, instead of an adorable animal sidekick, she has Eleanor. But that's close enough, right?
The Good Place returns from an unnecessarily long winter hiatus tonight on NBC at 8:30/7:30c, so pull up a chair, kick back, and let Tahani and the rest of the ragtag gang teach you a thing or two about being a good person-- in the afterlife.
If you love Tahani's polished sense of style, perhaps you'll love that of the noble Margaery Tyrell, too.
