Super Cool People: Phil Provencio

It should come as no surprise to anyone that my favorite part of this business is the long list of super talented people that I get to meet and work with along the way. Today is the first of a regular series we're starting here at Jordandené to introduce you to some of these talented gems.

I truly can’t believe I’ve had the pleasure to work with someone as skilled and amazing as Phil Provencio. He’s one of my favorite photographers and is a pretty big deal in the comedy world. Phil has been named by Paste Magazine as one of the top working comedy photographers around the globe. Which is actually how we met...

Jordandené is a proud sponsor of the local monthly comedy show, Brooklyn Brew HaHa, which is lucky enough to have Phil as its main photographer. Phil’s vibrant, lively photos have been regularly featured in Urban Outfitters stores as well as TimeOut New York, Variety, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and SNL, and are displayed in galleries at the Comedy Cellar’s VU and Caroline’s on Broadway here in New York City.

I’m so thankful that I’ve been able to work with Phil and now have the pleasure of sharing a bit of his gorgeous work with you.

When did you really know you wanted to do what you do?

It probably has been a lot of things: Working at comedy clubs growing up, developing an interest in taking photos of friends, and working for insane bosses in a bunch of different jobs all helped. But moving to New York really tied everything together nicely and put a bow on top to work towards.

What’s your favorite part of your creative process?

Too many. I’m spoiled. When a concept comes together that fits a comedian just right for a photoshoot, it’s *muah.* After a shoot, I love sitting down and getting in the zone with music and coffee to edit work that I'm excited about. Or the celebratory beer or post-show hang after a shoot is always magic. Honestly, knowing you got some good shots and the time between editing them the next day is like friggin' Christmas.

What has surprised you the most about the photography business?

There's a lot of talent out there. Just when you're getting comfortable or happy with work you've done, something new will come along and melt your face. Personally, it’s great; I love a challenge and re-inventing my style constantly.

Can you show us one of your favorite images?

Who would win in a fight between Terminator and Robocop?

A Jedi.

What do you nerd out on the most?

Huge Star Wars Fan. Love me some Alien vs. Predator action-- but not the movies; they stunk. Or anything in the Ridley Scott universe is great. Marvel has just made so many wet dreams come true lately, it's hard to pick.

What’s your favorite show to binge watch?

Too many! We're Netflix delirious. Finally catching up on Boardwalk Empire with the girlfriend and Maron on IFC right now. Love watching Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Louie, Homeland… It’s a real struggle to be productive with all of these options just waiting for you.

Where do you like to hang out online / where can we find you?

I probably spend the most on Instagram @philprovencio but love reminiscing about old shows / shoots on my website. And Facebook is fun because it's probably the closest I’ll ever come to being a grandfather. Scrolling through my feed and seeing one of my pictures as someone’s default profile or personal page picture? Definitely makes me shed a single tear of happiness.
